A Missouri state lawmaker said her husband has died from COVID-19 weeks after the unvaccinated couple contracted the virus.
State Rep. Sara Walsh, a Republican from Ashland, announced on Twitter Thursday that her husband, Steve Walsh, 63, had succumbed to the virus after they were diagnosed in early August.
“It saddens my heart to share that this morning my best friend and beloved husband Steve Walsh was welcomed to Heaven’s glory into the arms of Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior,” Walsh tweeted. “Thank you to everyone who has lifted us up in prayer.”
Walsh had asked for prayers in an Aug. 3 tweet saying her husband was “very sick” and hospitalized. She later said she had received hundreds of messages of “love and support” for her partner.
Walsh has previously said she didn’t get vaccinated because the treatments had not yet been fully approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration.
Walsh said getting vaccinated was a personal choice and balked at getting a shot after not contracting the virus for more than a year during the pandemic. The lawmaker said some of her friends also had adverse reactions to it, KCRG reported earlier this month.
Walsh tweeted Saturday that she had recovered from the virus and was out of quarantine while her husband was “past the virus/quarantine” stage, but was still recovering in a hospital.
“I’m praying the Love of God fills all of the troubled souls out there speaking unkindness,” Walsh tweeted.
Walsh, who was elected in 2017, is currently running for US Rep. Vicky Hartzler’s 4th congressional district seat. Walsh’s husband had worked as Hartzler’s press secretary for 10 years.
“We loved Steve for his enormous heart, passion for life, and the joy he brought to everyone who was lucky enough to meet him,” Hartzler, who is vying for a Senate seat, said in a statement. “His love of God and his beautiful wife, Sara, was undeniable.”
Hartzler, meanwhile, asked that Walsh’s family be allowed to mourn privately. Some on Twitter, however, questioned whether Steve Walsh’s death was “preventable.”
“Please keep politics out of this and move forward by educating yourself and others about covid and the vaccine,” one reply to Sara Walsh’s announcement read. “A very preventable tragedy could have been avoided.”
