It’s a real sign of the times.
A photo from the raging Southern California wildfires is being heralded on social media as the defining picture of 2020.
The snap by Associated Press photographer Noah Berger shows an inferno surrounding a wooden plaque at the entrance to a “Senior Center” that asks visitors to “Wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance, stay safe.”
“Come join us!” it states.
The apocalyptic scene referencing was captured on Tuesday in Napa County. It quickly spread on Twitter, with many calling it an encapsulation of our chaos-filled year.
“2020 in a single remarkable photo,” wrote Twitter user Rupert Myers.
Another person said that “this is gonna be the cover photo in the history chapter about 2020.”
Some even saw it as a meme come to life, drawing comparisons to a widely shared comic of a dog sitting at a table in a fire-filled room saying “this is fine.”
“The ‘This is fine’ meme 2020 remix,” wrote British TV critic Toby Earle.
Hundreds of wildfires are roaring across the Golden State, sparked by thousands of lightning strikes associated with recent storms that lacked any rain.
Northern California’s wine country has been especially hard hit, with at least 175 structures in the region, including homes, destroyed from the flames as of Thursday.
