Nearly 2,000 Los Angeles school staffers and students have tested positive for COVID-19 since going back to class last week, data shows.
The Los Angeles Unified School District had logged at least 1,936 students and employees infected with the virus as of Tuesday, according to figures compiled by the group Parents Supporting Teachers.
The figure represents less than 0.4 percent of its 451,000 students and 60,000 employees.
Classes resumed for the new school year last Monday, with mandatory weekly testing for all students and staff attending in-person instruction, regardless of vaccination status.
The group calculated the case number from individual figures at various school sites, but the totals could change as the tests from the first week continue to be processed, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“Test results and case details are continuously updated, and information on any dashboard should be considered a point-in-time report,” district rep Shannon Haber told the paper.
School officials have said that in addition to regular COVID-19 testing, students and faculty will be required to wear masks and follow social-distancing rules.
The district is subject to state requirements that at least call for all school staff to show proof of vaccination or face weekly testing.
