LOS ANGELES – George R.R. Martin missed Wednesday’s world premiere of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” after contracting COVD-19 from last week’s Comic-Con fan convention in San Diego.
The fantasy author was slated to be the guest of honor at the showbiz premiere honoring his prequel to “Game of Thrones,” but delivered the “unfortunate announcement” in a tweet titled “Travel updates.”
Martin, 73, said he was quarantined in a Los Angeles hotel after three positive COVID tests.
Still wearing his trademark fisherman’s cap in a brief YouTube video, a barely raspy Martin said he had minor symptoms with “sniffles, and I cough once in a while.” But he insi that he was feeling fine.
“I’m being well taken care of and I’m taking the drugs, and I should go good,” Martin said. “My thanks to any of you worrying about me. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

‘House of the Dragon’: Cast worries about living up to ‘Game of Thrones’ at Comic-Con
During the “House of the Dragon” premiere at Los Angeles’ Academy Museum, Casey Bloys, HBO’s chief content officer, explained Martin’s absence from the podium.
“I was going to start today by introducing George R.R. Martin and tell you how great it is to have George on the journey with us,” Bloys said. “Unfortunately, George got COVID at Comic-Con, so he’s not here. He’s feeling fine, so nothing to worry about.”
Martin attended the July 23 Comic-Con panel for the HBO prequel to “Game of Thrones.” Executive producer Miguel Sapochnik had missed the Comic-Con panel after contracting COVID-19.
Based on Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and tells the backstory of House Targaryen.
At Comic-Con, Martin promised the series, beginning Aug. 21, will feature complex emotions from its stars including Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Paddy Considine.
“There is certainly evil,” said Martin. “The most interesting characters are gray characters. … All of these characters have good in them and evil in them, and it’s about the choices they make.”
