Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that data should show in the next few weeks whether it’s safe and effective for those who received a COVID-19 vaccine to get a different brand for their booster shot.
The White House chief medical adviser said findings on whether the Johnson & Johnson vaccine should be widely used as a booster for the Pfizer and Moderna shots will be ready within a “few days to a week.”
“Then the data looking at Pfizer as the [booster] to the [others] will be available somewhere in the first week or at the most, [second week] of October,” Fauci said at a White House COVID-19 press briefing.
Fauci said data is already available from a study that looked at using the Moderna vaccine as a booster with other immunizations. He didn’t provide the results.
Still, he stressed that widely mixing and matching vaccines will need the approval of federal regulators.
“As with all things we do, they must be submitted to the FDA for their regulatory approval,” he said.

Federal regulators have only approved the Pfizer vaccine for booster shots so far.
People who have already received a full regimen of Pfizer can receive a third dose if they’re over the age of 65, older than 18 and have an underlying medical condition that makes them more susceptible to the disease or are at a high risk of getting the virus from their job.

Those who are immunocompromised and have been vaccinated with Moderna also can get a Pfizer booster.
