Italy’s prime minister has told the BBC that the European Union risks failing as a project in the coronavirus crisis.
Giuseppe Conte says the EU must act in an adequate and co-ordinated way to help countries worst hit by the virus.
Mr Conte says the European Union needs to rise to the challenge of what he calls “the biggest test since the Second World War”.
This was his first interview with the UK broadcast media since the pandemic exploded in Italy seven weeks ago.
He was speaking as Italy and some other EU countries try to push more frugal members of the bloc to issue so-called “corona bonds” – sharing debt that all EU nations would help to pay off. The Netherlands in particular has opposed the idea, leading to a clash between finance ministers of the eurozone.

Haha Italy.. The Dutch and Germans warned u 100x when u kept spending and borrowing money while already being in huge debt. U kept increasing ur debt x gdp while having a big mouth to the Eu when warning u. Ur creative bookkeeping and irresponsible finacanial behavior caused responsible countries to bail u out by increasing the retirement age by 2 years and increase an enormous amount of taxes. We bailed you out but the years after that nothing has changed.. You kept spending and borrowing money and ur debt x gdp didn't decrease. Again the Dutch and Germans warned you but u didn't want to listen again. Now ur in a financial crisis situation and want the tax payers of responsible countries to bail u out AGAIN. No way! We gave u enough chances to change ur irresponsible behavior so we're not gonna suffer again for ur irresponsibility. Conte can beg whatever he wants but he will not get our tax money again. He should've taxed his own people after getting 100x warnings from other countries..

Send the trojka over. Help in exchange for structural economic reforms. That would truly be a win-win situation for both Italy and the North.

Italy did not reform their economy and just kept spending while the Netherlands did so well and showed to be such a good investment, they where the first country ever that got payed for lending money from the world bank !
A European bond would mean The Netherlands would be responsible for the debt of every country that was unwilling to reform not only the corona costs .
Only an idiot would agree to signing a lease with a broke person.
They can borrow money with a binding contract in place instead.

Italy should have listened to all other EU countries when they were told they were borrowing too much. But then they claimed it was their right as a sovereign country. So now they can deal with it as a sovereign country or accept EU help with conditions. They can't borrow more money without conditions at the expense of EU countries that are financially responsible (who would be liable is Italy defaults on those loans).
